Care Proceedings

Protecting your rights. Supporting your family. Navigating the process with clarity.

When social services become involved with your family, it can be one of the most distressing and confusing experiences you may ever face. At Broad Street Solicitors, we are here to support and guide you through every step of the process with sensitivity, clarity, and determination.

Our dedicated care proceedings team has extensive experience representing parents, grandparents, guardians, and other family members in cases involving the local authority. We understand the urgency and seriousness of these matters and work tirelessly to ensure your voice is heard and your rights are protected.

We are proud to be Lexcel accredited—the Law Society’s legal practice quality mark—for our work in children and family law, reflecting the high standard of client care, expertise, and case management we bring to every matter.

What Are Care Proceedings?

Care proceedings are started by the local authority (usually social services) when there are concerns that a child may be at risk of harm. The court is asked to decide whether the child should be removed from their parents’ care or whether support can be provided to keep the family together.

If you’ve been told that the local authority is starting care proceedings, or you’ve been asked to attend a Public Law Outline (PLO) meeting, it is essential to get legal advice immediately. These are time-sensitive and high-stakes matters, and the earlier we’re involved, the more we can do to help.

How We Can Help

We provide expert representation in:

  • Public Law Outline (PLO) meetings
Support during pre-proceedings to help you understand concerns and respond effectively to avoid court action where possible.
  • Care Orders & Supervision Orders
Representation in court if the local authority is seeking to remove your child or supervise their care.
  • Emergency Protection Orders (EPOs)
Urgent representation when the local authority seeks immediate removal of a child.
  • Interim Care Hearings
Advocating for your child to remain with you or a suitable family member during ongoing proceedings.
  • Special Guardianship Applications
Advice and support for relatives or close friends who wish to care for a child long-term.
  • Appeals & Post-Court Advice
Helping you understand the outcome of proceedings and explore your options for review or appeal.
